I think this is a touch of “rose-coloured spectacles” – i.e. we see what we want to see. For me, life here is 100% more civilised than anything you can experience in Britain (and in Wales, certainly).
I wouldn’t want to live in the UK again, if I can help it. Life here, in general, is so much better. But, then, I am biased and I came here because I love Italy (and not only for the food). :-)

I am Italian and I live in UK now for 3 years. I completely agree with that, you can find crap food even in Italy, but it’s the opposite that UK… it is very, very difficult to find bad food, whereas in UK it is like you are saying, if you go randomly the probability to be disappointed are at least 80% of the time… to my taste, food is either too bland, too greasy or stale…

So true… not only applicable to British foods but to other foods as well. You can only say that a food was great if you go to a right resto or a right cafe.

I think in London or nearby. You have to move out a bit to get the scotch eggs (which I really hate) or the ploughman’s lunches (which I love). Last year we had ploughman’s lunches in a pub in Upton-upon-Severn, so I know they’re still alive and kicking, so to speak.

I am in the middle of writing a post about my culinary adventures in the UK a few weeks back. My take is a bit different. No pub food in any of the pubs I visited. No Scotch eggs or ploughman’s lunches to be had for love nor money. The food was fine but crab salad and Kaeng phet pet yang do not scream “pub” to me.
