Thick, thin, bushy or not. Why do they want to make mine different?

Facial hair. For men, it’s something you either like or don’t. For women, of course, it’s different.

But, there’s one bit of facial hair that, without them, it looks strange and so most people leave them although most people, it seems, these days, make them as small as possible.

I’m talking eyebrows.

To be honest, what is the point of them? Other than allowing other people to tell when you are surprised or angry or thoughtful. Unless you’ve been botoxed up top, in which case it’s not possible to move them, which I always find quite amusing.

But, other than giving indicators of your mood, they seem pointless.

But they are there. And, love them or hate them, you would look pretty odd without them.

However, why is it, when I go to the barber’s, they always want to ‘trim’ mine? It’s not like mine are so bushy as to seem like overhanging rocks. They’re quite flat, really, though thick ….. ish.

I suppose the only strange thing about mine is that there are certain individual hairs that grow quite long. You can’t actually see that normally, since they flatten out along the brow. But, if I pull them down, sometimes the odd one will reach my cheek. But mostly you’d never know this.

These days, for both men and women, the art of plucking or shaving your eyebrows so that there is a thin line or, at least, less than was originally is widespread. But these are, generally, people under 30 or those with huge eyebrows. I am not under 30 and mine aren’t huge.

So why does the barber ask me? Worse, why does he feel he should make sure that I really, really do want them left alone?

They may have no specific meaning or use but they are a part of the character of your face and I like mine just the way they are. It’s bad enough that I have to shave most days and have my haircut once a month. I don’t want to be worrying about whether my eyebrows are too thick and need trimming. Bah!

    • I know re: fashion trends.
But don’t you think that, actually, we never ‘notice’ them unless they are outrageously thick or outrageously plucked? I mean, think about the people you know, then think about their eyebrows. Now go and look for real. It’s quite interesting (I think) :-)

      • Well, the general consensus seems to be that they are there to keep the sweat out of our eyes :-)
But that’s what the web says which, as we all know, is no guarantee of truth ;-)

  1. HI ANDY-

I get my eyebrows waxed “ouch”, and I often wondered about their purpose as well. huh. One time Skipp and Dolan shaved their eyebrows off completely. True story – and whilst Skipp was at his restaurant walking about and chatting w/the regulars, they would say things like, “something is different about you”, and so forth, too funny :-)
If you want my opinion on yours send me a close up of your handsome face. :-)
    Love you
    Gail
    peace…….

    • I know what you mean. strange, isn’t it, how being without your eyebrows just causes people to know there’s something different but without being able to pinpoint it :-D
I’ll see what I can do about the pic, Gail ;-)
p.s. I’ve never had anything waxed – nor intend to. Far too painful!

  2. Hi again-

when I get my eyebrows and lip waxed it makes my eyes water so badly. It hurts like hell. I have never had anything waxed south of my navel – no way – BIG ouch!!!!!! and there is a waxing called “The Brazilian”.. oh my.
    Love you
    Gail
    peace……

  3. Ahhh yes, I call my husbands the mad professor brow… every now and then a brow hair will grow 10cm overnight and protrude from his face like a bad nanna mole hair. I pluck it when he least expects it, then laugh as he complains about how much it hurt…. you boys are such wimps!!!

    • Hi Cathy,
Yes, we are wimps, that is true. V always wnted to pluck out the long ones but I would never allow it! Not because it would hurt but just because I’m sort of attached to them LOL

  4. I must admit, I’ve never really given much consideration to my eyebrows! Although I do quite like the people who have the guts to do things like shave pieces out of theirs. I’ve sometimes considered it but then thought “what if it goes wrong?”

    • Ah but you could always say ‘It was meant to be like this!’
The thing is that I like mine just as they are and I can’t be doing with this fashion (certainly here) of shaving them short or having them pencil thin (this is the men I’m talking about).
