Some of the worst things about the old soviet Russia was their tendency to force people into internal exile.
What terrible people they were! Forcing people to move away from their homes and families, restricting their movements, even in the new place.
So it comes as some surprise to find that the UK did it too!
Italy did it too (the so called confino under the Mussolini’s regime). People were forced to live in remote areas and they were monitored all the time.
A terrible thing, indeed.

But to think that it was going on until recently in a supposed democratic country is worse.
Although you are right – it is a terrible thing anyway.
