I tend to get roped into all sorts of things here on the basis that I am a native English speaker – and the only one in the company.
That’s not to say that there aren’t people here who speak English very well. However, when there is something that can be done better by a native English speaker, I am the first (only?) choice.
So, whilst I am a Project Manager here and my main job is looking after projects and being the first point of contact with the customer (at which I am very good), I also help with the writing of Quality and Technical reports, dealing with suppliers and, the latest thing, today, interviewing someone who, on his CV says that he both speaks and writes English “well”.
We shall see. ‘Well’ can be anything from fairly poor to almost fluent. And, this is an Italian giving this appraisal (of himself).
To be honest I like the idea of being called on to do these ‘extras’ as it gives some great variety in the work and makes me feel unique, which I always liked.
God knows what it will be like when they take on another native English speaker. Will I be like Daffyd?
Hi bloke! Hope everything is fine …. Yesterday I met V at work… what about ? could this chart be useful?
I love your posts…

Yes, I do know about this. Not something that I’m too happy about but……
Thanks for the compliment.
Cheers

I feel your pain on the “speaks English well”. We have many Polish at work that claim to speak English well. By this they mean they know a large collection of English words. Putting them in the correct order for a sentence, not so good at…
Hi TSM,
Actually, in this case, he did speak English quite well and, for an Italian, had been quite modest on his CV – unless I have been here too long and it’s really a comparison with other non-native speakers!
Hi Andy,
